2016: Year Of The Superhero | Film News

After the festive period with the new year looming, what have we got to look forward to in 2016? The answer: a host of new superhero showdowns and clashes at the movies. Marvel continue to grow from strength to strength, heading into their phase 3, but 2016 marks the start of rival Warner Bros DC universe. Also 20th Century Fox take the biggest gamble with an x-rated and fourth wall breaking film and the third film of the new X-men trilogy.

Here is a short list of the big hitters to look out for in 2016 in order of release.

1: Deadpool February 4, 2016

Ryan Reynolds stars as the smart-ass mercenary who learns he has cancer and is left horrifically scarred after undergoing an experimental procedure, so forms the alter-ego Deadpool. This R rated superhero comedy action looks to do something a bit different from the current production line of superhero films by having plenty of Deadpool breaking the fourth wall. Also expect appearances from other X-Men characters including Colossus.

2: Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice March 25, 2016

The first superhero clash is the follow up to Man Of Steel with returning Henry Cavill as Superman and Zack Synder directing. This film plans to set up the DC movie universe introducing a number of new heroes including Ben Affleck‘s Batman and Gal Gadot‘s Wonderwoman. I would expect Batman and Superman not to get on at first but by the end of the film forming the Justice League to rival Marvel’s Avengers.

3: Captain America: Civil War April 29, 2016

Anthony & Joe Russo are directing their second Captain America film after the success of The Winter Soldier. This is the second superhero clash of the year as government forces believe the collateral damage has been too high and superheroes need regulation. In the post SHIELD/Hydra age this is not something Captain America believes in and Ironman stands on the other side of the conflict. There will be plenty of Avengers appearing as battle lines are drawn.

4: X-Men: Apocalypse May 19, 2016

The latest X-Men movie will cap off a trilogy that started with First Class followed by Days of Future Past and now the third instalment directed by X-Men stalwart Bryan Singer. The X-Men team, including James McAvoy‘s Professor X, will take on the ancient original mutant Apocalypse, Oscar Isaac, that is set on destroying the world.

5: Suicide Squad August 5, 2016

A secret government agency recruits imprisoned super-villains including Will Smith‘s Deadshot and Margot Robbie‘s Harley Quinn to execute a dangerous back-ops missions in exchange for clemency. This is the second DC instalment that is a different type of comic book film introducing super-villains rather superheroes. It will also showcase the first appearance of Jared Leto‘s Joker.

6: Doctor Strange October 28, 2016

Doctor-Strange

The next Marvel film in phase three aims to expand the universe further into the magical realm. After his career is destroyed, Benedict Cumberbatch’s Dr Stephen Strange, gets a new lease on life when a sorcerer takes him under his wing to teach him to defend the world against evil.

It’s a busy year to be a superhero fan! Personally I’m very excited and look forward to plenty of epic cinema trips.
