Regression, the latest film by Spanish director Alejandro Amenabar opened to huge Box-Office success making it the highest grossing homegrown film this year. The film brought in $2.87 million over the weekend and managed to not suffer too much competition from the highly watched football match between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid.

 

It also came close to toppling 2014’s recording-breaking A Spanish Affair that earned $3.2 million during its opening weekend and beat the June release of Maria Ripoll’s Ahora o Nunca which grossed $1.6 million during its opening weekend.

 

Regression stars Ethan Hawke as a detective investigating the rape of a teenage girl played by Emma Watson. During the investigation, Hawke together with a psychoanalyst (David Thewlis) discovers evidence of a satanic cult.
