Ava DuVernay’s ‘A Wrinkle In Time’ A Diversity Win! | Film News

Ava DuVernay, perhaps the most prolific female filmmaker Hollywood at the moment, has gone on to Twitter to share the set photos of her newest project, A Wrinkle In Time.

The Disney blockbuster is an adaptation of the much adored 1963 children fantasy novel by Madeleine L’Engle of the same name. It follows the story of 13 years old, Meg Murry, who sets of on a journey to rescue her scientist father with the help of her genius brother, an older classmate and three odd neighbours.

As most of DuVernay‘s projects, women and artists of color are at the forefront, both in front and behind the camera. She has enlisted an A list ensemble.

Fresh out of Moonlight, Andre Holland will join Oprah Winfrey, Mindy Kaling, Reese Witherspoon, Chris Pine, Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Rowan Blanchard. Newest Hollywood comer, Storm Reid will portray Meg Murry, following her performance in 12 Years A Slave. This may very well be the most diverse cast ever seen in a project of such size and genre.

What is most impressive is that the Disney blockbuster makes DuVernay the first woman of color to direct a live-action $100 million feature. A definite diversity and female win!

Prolific director DuVernay has many other exciting projects in store for us! DuVernay has been approached to direct Intelligent Life, a science fiction story about a U.N. worker trained to represent mankind in the event of an encounter with alien life. The script was written by Jurassic World director/writer, Colin Trevorrow.

DuVernay is also developing the original drama TV series, Queen Sugar for OWN network. Set in Louisiana, the series deals with three siblings: an activist and journalist, a modernist mother and their brother, single father trying to rebuild his life after jail.

Shooting for A Wrinkle In Time has just wrapped in New Zealand but we will need to wait until April 6th, 2018 for the film to be released.
