Brie Larson will re-team with the director that helped her career breakthrough in 2013 with the excellent drama Short Term 12, Destin Cretton. The Academy Award-winning actress has signed on to star alongside Michael B. Jordan in the Warner Bros. drama Just Mercy.

Jamie Foxx is also on board, with Cretton co-writing the script alongside Andrew Lanham. Cretton, Lanham and Larson also worked together on last year’s adaptation of The Glass Castle.

Based on the book Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption by Bryan Stevenson, the film adaptation will tell the story of a young lawyer fighting for equal justice in a flawed legal system. One of his first cases turns out to be representing a young man sentenced to die for a murder he didn’t commit.

The case draws the protagonist into a web of conspiracy, political machination, and legal brinksmanship, transforming his understanding of mercy and justice forever.

The adaptation had originally been set up at Broad Green Pictures before moving to Warner Bros. earlier this year. Production is due to begin next month in Atlanta.

This is the latest excellent role for Larson, one of the best working actors right now. This role will be a part of her big 2019, which is headlined by her starring role in Captain Marvel, while it should also see the wide release of her directorial debut, Unicorn Store.
