Sounding not entirely unlike the plot for BBC Three sitcom Cuckoo, upcoming comedy Why Him? tells the tale of a father taking his family to visit his daughter, currently in attendance at Stanford University – when they arrive, they meet her boyfriend, a wannabe internet entrepreneur who the father immediately hates. Now the project, from I Love You Man director John Hamburg, has two names attached to star; Bryan Cranston as the father and James Franco as the obnoxious new boyfriend.

Cranston has made a name for himself playing dads – although this role is likely to be closer in tone to the lighthearted Malcolm in the Middle role than it is his career-defining performance in Breaking Bad. Cranston can be seen next in the awards-baiting Trumbo, which arrives in UK cinemas on January 22.
