Going from relatively unknown to a worldwide sensation has it perks, but also its downsides. Something Star Wars star Daisy Ridley has discovered, and while much of it has been very positive and supportive, with many praising her character Rey for being a strong female role model – not all of it has.

Ridley used her platform to spread some love and body positivity yesterday, and spoke out in response to some cruel comments she received on her International Women’s Day Instragram post. One Instagram user posted a meme where she accused Ridley of setting “unrealistic expectations” by being too thin. Ridley responded directly to her critic, writing: “‘Real women’ are all shape and sizes, all ethnicities, all levels of brave, have families, don’t have families,”

“I am a ‘real woman’ like every other woman in this world”. She then deleted the post which included a picture of her comment and the critic’s meme, after she found out that some of her fans had sent the critic some disrespectful comments. Ridley then wrote another Instagram post, encouraging kindness. While the post was a call for kindness, the admirable and humble star also proved that she refuses to be silenced and trampled on.

“It is much more hurtful to continue to slate other women than BE a woman, BE a character, BE whoever you want to be. I’m a normal girl thrust into extraordinary circumstances, just like [my Star Wars character] Rey. I will not apologize for how I look, what I say, and how I live my life cause what’s happening inside is much more important anyway”. Well said, Daisy. Read the full post below:
