‘Downsizing’ Starring Matt Damon To Open 74th International Venice Festival | Film News

Known for being the ultimate launching pad for award season contenders, the 74th edition of the International Venice Festival will open with Alexander Payne‘s Downsizing starring Matt Damon.

In the past, the Festival has launched Oscar winners Birdman in 2014, Gravity in 2013 and the latest La La Land just last year!

Downsizing follows a therapist, played by Damon, who undertakes a procedure to be shrunken to four inches tall so that he and his family can help save the planet while maintaining a good lifestyle. Payne has assembled an impressive supporting cast which include Laura Dern, Kirsten Wiig, Christoph Waltz and Jason Sudeikis.

Payne, no stranger to the award circuit, has already been nominated for his work on Nebraska, About Schmidt and Sideways but this will be his first time in Venice. Perhaps winking at the possible political or environmental turn the festival will take this year, Downsizing will not doubt bring back the quirky style and warm honesty Payne is known for!

Damon will also be seen in George Clooney‘s Suburbicon and Ocean’s 8 to be released later this year and early 2018.

Paramount will launch Downsizing in U.S. on limited release on Dec. 22. The Venice Film Festival will run from Aug. 30 to Sept. 9 but has yet to release a complete competition lineup.
