First Trailer For ‘Churchill’ Starring Brian Cox | Film Trailer

Patriotic films are typically reserved for American productions, so it feels a little strange to see a trailer for a patriotic film that’s so distinctly British. The first trailer for Churchill has dropped, with Brian Cox looking dynamic in the title role.

Any time a biopic hits, especially one revolving around a political figure, it has the chance to fall into stuffy, by-the-numbers territory and while Churchill will likely have few surprises up its sleeve, the trailer is intriguing. The cinematography looks at times oddly beautiful and Cox is probably as good of a Winston Churchill imitator you could ask for.

The film is directed by Jonathan Teplitzky (Broadchurch) and will alongside Cox star Miranda Richardson, John Slattery and James Purefoy.

Oddly enough, this won’t be the only Churchill-based film releasing this year.

The Darkest Hour, directed by Joe Wright (Atonement) and starring Gary Oldman in the title role will be released in November, and though it will follow a different time period of Churchill’s life – beginning days after his election as Prime Minister – the films will likely be forever compared, like Armageddon and Deep Impact, so Cox better bring his A-game to compete with what’s sure to be a great Oldman performance.

Churchill will be released Friday, June 2 in the US and Friday, June 16 in the UK.
