First Trailer Unveiled For Sofia Coppola’s Haunting ‘The Beguiled’ | Film Trailer

Lost In Translation this is not. The first trailer for Sofia Coppola‘s much anticipated The Beguiled has arrived and it’s a doozy. Coppola has always been adept at mixing themes and ideas but this might be her first true genre picture and judging by the trailer, she’s got a knack for it.

The film is based on the Thomas Cullinan novel of the same name and is set in civil war era Virginia, revolving around a seminary for young ladies disrupted by the arrival of a wounded soldier. Nicole Kidman, Colin Farrell, Kirsten Dunst and Elle Fanning star.

Coppola has tackled quiet solitude (twice), suicidal teens, and the privileged rich (also twice), but this might be the most interesting step of her career so far. The trailer, despite its unnerving greatness, might suffer from revealing a little too much, but if we’ve learnt one thing from Coppola’s prior work, the final product is never quite what we expect.

The film opens Friday, June 30. Let’s hope it lives up to its haunting tease.
