Gael Garcia Bernal Joins Maggie Gyllenhaal’s ‘Kindergarten Teacher’ | Film News

Gael Garcia Bernal has joined Maggie Gyllenhaal‘s drama, Kindergarten Teacher. Filming is set to begin Wednesday July 12, and the film will be based on Nadav Lapid‘s Israeli film of the same name. Gyllenhaal is set to star and produce, while Sara Colangelo is directing from her own adapted screenplay.

The film follows a kindergarten teacher living in Staten Island who grows more numb each day she remains stuck in her mundane life. When she discovers a prodigious five-year old poet in her class, she becomes obsessed with the child and his talent.

Alongside Bernal, Rosa Salazar (Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials), Michael Chernus (Orange Is The New Black), Anna Baryshnikov (Manchester By The Sea), Ajay Naidu (Office Space), Daisy Tahan, and Samrat Chakrabarti will join the cast.

Gyllenhaal is producing alongside Maven Pictures, who have produced such films as Bernie and The Kids Are All Right, which share a similar, intimate look at flawed or damaged characters attempting to navigate through life as Kindergarten Teacher does.

If Colangelo and Gyllenhaal’s film can capture that same vibe, as well as the major parts of the original film that earned it the Grand Prize at the new talent competition at the 2015 Taipei Film Festival, this could be another excellent drama from Maven Pictures.
