Garner Family – I Can’t Breathe | New Music
In 2014, Eric Garner died in New York City at the hands of the police. Now, Garner’s family has released “I Can’t Breathe”, a new song titled after Garner’s final words. The song features Garner’s brother and sister, Ellisha and Steven Flagg. Artists, including Miguel, Beyoncé, Jay Z, The Game and Snoop Dogg have criticised police forces nationwide.
“I Can’t Breathe” comes with clanking piano and despairing vocals. It is both heavy and soaring, like somehow treading water wearing concrete on your feet. The track mixes soulful singing with booming bars of rap. The fadeout features a chorus of sisters and mothers railing against their brothers and sons being chopped down.
