HBO Acquires ‘The Undoing’ Starring Nicole Kidman | TV News

HBO is set to re-team with the creative forces that made Big Little Lies such a hit, as they’ve acquired the limited series The Undoing, which is set to star Nicole Kidman and has been written by David E. Kelley.

The series will be an adaptation of the Jean Hanff Korelitz book You Should Have Known, which is the story of Grace Sachs, a successful therapist with a book on the way and a healthy family.

However: “weeks before her book is published, a chasm opens in her life: a violent death, a missing husband, and, in the place of a man Grace thought she knew, only a chain of terrible revelations. Left behind in the wake of a spreading and very public disaster, and horrified by the ways in which she has failed to heed her own advice, Grace must dismantle one life and create another for her child and herself”.

“We’re thrilled to continue our creative relationships with both Nicole and David, and can’t wait to bring this show to life”, said president of HBO programming, Casey Bloys.

Like Big Little Lies, Kelley will also be executive producer and showrunner, and the series is expected to have a similar episode count of around seven episodes. “David has created another propulsive series with a fascinating, complicated female role at its center”, Kidman said, before adding that she was ecstatic to continue collaborating with HBO.

With the success of Big Little Lies – which itself is getting a second season – and combined with other in-development limited series such as the adaptation of Celeste Ng‘s incredible Little Fires Everywhere (which Reese Witherspoon is also involved in), and now this, there seems to be a trend in limited series based off acclaimed novels.

Considering the other trends that have recently developed in the TV world – small screen remakes of classic films, spin-off upon spin-off – it’s a pleasant surprise to see acclaimed works be adapted by equally acclaimed creative minds looking to simply make compelling series. Hopefully it’s a trend that continues, and that The Undoing is the latest hit.
