‘IT’ Director Andy Muschietti To Helm Live-Action ‘Attack On Titan’ | Film News

IT director Andy Muschietti is currently busy with the highly anticipated horror sequel, but we now know what his following project will be. He will be helming a live-action adaptation of the celebrated manga series Attack On Titan for Warner Bros.

The Attack On Titan series is one of the most popular manga series around. Written and illustrated by Hajime Isayama, it has sold over 76 million copies since its 2009 debut. Set in a world overrun by giant, man-eating creatures known as Titans, the series follows humanity’s constant fight for survival in this scary new world.

It has actually been adapted before, into an anime television series in 2013, with the third season dropping as recently as earlier this year. There has also been a Japanese-language silver screen adaptation in 2015 from director Shinji Higuchi (Shin Godzilla), which was released in two parts and earned $46 million.

There have also been numerous spin-offs and interconnected series introduced to the series over the years. So basically, it’s a massive interconnected universe with a huge following. Thus no surprise that Warner Bros. has jumped onboard for a big English-language adaptation, and even less of a surprise that they’ve hired the man that helped reel in a cool $700 million worldwide last year with IT.

If the Attack On Titan adaptation can harness the power of its large fanbase, there’s every chance we’re looking at one of the next big franchises in Hollywood. Muchietti is quickly becoming one of the big go-to directors, and it will be fascinating to see what he can do with this material.
