J.J Abrams Responds To Accusations That ‘The Force Awakens’ Is A ‘Rip Off’ | Interviews

Thankfully, J.J Abrams‘s creation The Force Awakens has spectacularly reignited our faith in the Star Wars franchise; whilst breaking several box office records and being poised to become the highest grossing film of all time. However, several fans (including myself) managed to notice extreme similarities between George Lucas‘ 1977 classic creation that started it all – A New Hope, which left certain individuals slightly disappointed with the much anticipated film.

Although, it seems the director doesn’t find your lack of faith disturbing, for after acknowledging that some viewers might find the film overly familiar, Abrams maintained his view that it was important to acknowledge both the franchise’s past whilst opening doors to the future. Speaking in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Abrams stated that: “I can understand that someone might say, ‘Oh, it’s a complete rip-off!’ What was important for me was introducing brand new characters using relationships that were embracing the history that we know to tell a story that is new — to go backwards to go forwards“.

He continued, openly admitting that he was hoping the criticisms would derive from merely a small few, despite having complete faith in his creation he deemed as special: “I knew that, whatever we did, there would be a group of people — and I was just hoping and praying that it would be smaller than not — that would take issue with any number of things”, he said. “But I knew we weren’t making the movie for any other reason than we believed that it could be something meaningful and special and entertaining and worthy of people’s time“. Admittedly, the similarities in premise were there, but you ultimately cannot deny that The Force Awakens left you amazed and speechless.
