It seems part of being an actor is going through some pretty awkward or totally bad auditions. Even though celebrities usually avoid revisiting those memories, Jake Gyllenhaal was so kind as to share one such humiliating story with Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show.

The actor talked about the time he auditioned for the role of Frodo in The Lord of the Rings – because “Have you seen [his] feet?” – and the whole thing turned out to be disastrous. Although Gyllenhaal’s agents were certain he was the perfect fit for the role, they omitted some of the prerequisites for the audition.

“I had a scene with lines where everyone had a British accent and I didn’t do one,” he said. Then, he added director Peter Jackson “turned to me and he was like ‘You are the worst actor that I have ever seen. Did anyone tell you you’re supposed to have an accent? Well fire your agents’.”

Gyllenhaal also had some more hilarious failed audition stories to share, like memories from his Dude, Where’s My Car? audition, where his sort of strange ‘s’ ruined everything. He admitted laughing, “I auditioned for a lot of classics that I’m not in!” Well, at least he’s done an incredible job ever since. Watch the clip below:
