Kumail Nanjiani & Issa Rae To Star In Romantic Comedy ‘The Lovebirds’ | Film News

Kumail Nanjiani (The Big Sick) and Issa Rae (Insecure) have signed on to star in Paramount’s romantic comedy The Lovebirds. The project will reunite Nanjiani with Big Sick director Michael Showalter, who is on board to helm from a script penned by Aaron Abrams, Brendan Gall, and Martin Gero.

The plot will revolve around a couple on the verge of a break-up who become involved in a murder mystery. That’s the only word we have on the plot right now, but the project is set to head into production at the end of the month.

Both stars have found critical acclaim with their own separate comedy projects. Nanjiani, as mentioned, starred in and co-wrote the autobiographical comedy-drama The Big Sick alongside spouse Emily V. Gordon, which earned them an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay.

Rae is the co-creator, writer, producer and star of HBO’s Insecure, which has earned critical acclaim since it premiered in 2016, and earned her multiple Golden Globe and Emmy nominations. She also recently appeared in another acclaimed project, the drama The Hate U Give.

Nanjiani and Rae teaming up for a romantic comedy – a genre possibly starting to have a bit of a renaissance – should get people very excited. If The Lovebirds can match the quality of their separate work, we should be in for something great.
