‘Lando’ Spinoff Movie Already In The Works | Film News
While most of the whole world outside of a few lucky film critics have yet to see Solo: A Star Wars Story, Lucasfilm clearly has some confidence in Donald Glover‘s Lando Calrissian. So much so that a Lando spinoff movie is already in the works.
Not only that, but it might arrive sooner than you think. Reports suggest that the spinoff will hits cinemas before the almost-certain-to-happen Solo sequel. Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy briefly spoke about the plans for the film at the Cannes premiere of Solo: A Star Wars Story:
“We think that the next spin-off will be dedicated to Lando Calrissian. Of course, there are still many stories to tell about Han and Chewbacca but Lando will be next”.
This makes sense if the studio thinks Lando will be the breakout character in this film, but also because Glover has practically taken over the pop culture landscape over the last year. His musical alter ego, Childish Gambino, is making waves and he’s also the creative mind behind the critically acclaimed FX series, Atlanta.
Striking while the iron is hot with Glover – who is sure to be incredibly in-demand in the coming months – is a smart business move. Solo reportedly does a solid job introducing Lando but he isn’t the focus of the film, and his backstory is not deeply delved into. That will likely come in the spinoff.
We’ll now wait on an official announcement, and possibly a fast-tracked release date if the reports mentioned above are to be believed. Until then, Solo: A Star Wars Story arrives in cinemas Friday, May 25.
