Margot Robbie To Star In Tonya Harding Biopic | Film News

It has been announced that Margot Robbie will play disgraced Olympic figure skater Tonya Harding in a biopic surrounding the events which led to her being banned from U.S. figure skating.

Tonya Harding was pitted against fellow figure skater Nancy Kerrigan at the 1994 U.S. Figure Skating Championships but before either of them made it out onto the ice, Kerrigan was attacked by a man just above the knee and was forced to withdraw, meaning Harding won the competition.

After being named to the U.S. Olympic Team, the attack on Kerrigan was traced back to Harding through her ex-husband, Jeff Gillooly, and her bodyguard, Shawn Eckhardt. Harding was immediately stripped of her titles and banned from U.S. figure skating for life.

The screenplay for the biopic, entitled I, Tonya, is being written by Steven Rogers and the project is being produced by Bryan Unkeless via Clubhouse Pictures. Robbie will also receive a producing credit through her LuckyChap Entertainment.

It is the latest project in a busy schedule for Robbie who can currently be seen in Whisky Tango Foxtrot and will soon be seen in Suicide Squad and The Legend of Tarzan. There is currently no release date set for I, Tonya.
