Missy Elliott Wins Innovator Award | Music News
Rap superstar and record producer extraordinaire Missy ‘Misdemeanour’ Elliott was given the coveted Innovator Award by Billboard Women In Music 2015 on December 11. On the night, 44 year old Elliott enjoyed the loudest standing ovation of all the winners, after delivering a tearful 6 minute long acceptance speech.
Encouraging all women to pursue a career in music, Elliott told her audience, “I stand here for all the women who been told you don’t fit the mold. She also took time to pay tribute to her female musical heroes, saying, “I wanna thank all the women before me… because they kicked down the door for me to be able to walk through“.
Elliott’s life story is an inspirational rags-to-riches tale. As a child she lived in extreme poverty. Aged just 14, Elliott and her mother fled from her abusive father. Today, the Grammy-award winner is one of the highest paid and most respected artists in the music business.
