Nasim Pedrad, Jason Mitchell & Danielle Brooks To Star In Rom-Com ‘Desperados’ | Film News

Per Collider, Saturday Night Live alum Nasim Pedrad, Jason Mitchell (Mudbound), and Danielle Brooks (Orange Is The New Black) have signed on to star in the Netflix romantic comedy Desperados.

Pedrad will reportedly play a neurotic woman who takes her friends to Mexico in an attempt to thwart a hateful email she accidentally sent to her new boyfriend, who is there in hospital. However during the trip, she keeps running into a man she recently had a terrible blind date with, but outside of the confines of that awkward encounter, she realises he may not be so terrible after all.

The filmmaker simply known as LP will direct from a script penned by Ellen Rapoport, with Mason Novick (Juno) producing.

Netflix commissioning another rom-com isn’t much of a surprise considering they’ve had success with the genre as of late, with titles such as Set It Up and To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before proving to be hits. Netflix doesn’t release viewing figures, but the sheer amount of press and social media chatter the films generated is proof enough that lots of people were watching.

The streaming platform already has the Gina Rodriguez comedy vehicle Someone Great in the can for next year as well, and Desperados is unlikely to be the last romantic comedy the company greenlights, as Netflix is not one to ignore a massive audience.

LP is an up-and-coming filmmaker who has many short films to her name and recently directed an episode of It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia. Her hiring is another recent example of Netflix giving a previously unknown filmmaker a chance at their directorial debut. Rapoport is a former writer for The Jamie Kennedy Experiment and also worked on the draft for the upcoming Clifford The Big Red Dog movie.

Production on Desperados is expected to begin early next year in Mexico.
