Netflix Commissions Baz Luhrmann Musical TV Series | TV News

Award winning producer, director and screenwriter Baz Luhrmann is planning a musical comeback with a new Netflix series titled The Get Down. The Australian has paired up with The Shield‘s Shawn Ryan to bring the show, which was initially thought of in 2013, to life with thirteen scripts for a first season already made.

The program takes place circa 1970s New York, at the peak of bankruptcy. A group of South Bronx teens with nowhere to call home and only each other to keep safe, find solace through hip-hop, punk and disco at a time where these genres were at the start of their era. The show is described as a “mythic saga of how New York at the brink of bankruptcy gave birth to hip-hop, punk and disco — told through the lives and music of the South Bronx kids who changed the city, and the world… forever”.

This will be Luhrmann’s first musical production since 2001’s Moulin Rouge starring Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman. His most recent work is shown in 1013’s The Great Gatsby 2013 with featured a stunning soundtrack executively produced by Shawn Carter (Jay-Z). Baz will apparently direct the first two episodes and the season finale. There is no official release date as of yet but casting is currently underway.
