New ‘King Kong’ Series With A Female Lead Focus In The Works | TV News

King Kong has hit the big screen eight times, but now after bullying Tom Hiddleston and Brie Larson in Kong: Skull Island, the monstrous ape will now be getting his own show.

Tuesday saw IM Global and MarVista Entertainment announcing the reinvention of King Kong Skull Island, the first-ever live-action television program set in the enormous King Kong universe. The upcoming series will be based on DeVito Artworks’ Skull Island property and Merian C. Cooper’s King Kong, and explore the different aspects of Skull Island and its origins.

The series plans to cast a female lead and multicultural ensemble cast to bring a fresher, contemporary take on the classic tale to the small screen. Though there’s no word yet on who the lead actress will be, Oscar nominees Jonathan Penner and Stacy Title have jumped aboard the King Kong Skull Island ship and will write and executive produce alongside Dannie Festa.

It’s been a privilege to work with Joe DeVito and his truly unique, never-before-seen Kong universe,” commented Festa. “We feel confident that it will be hugely appealing to fans all over the world.

On Penner and Title’s announced involvement, MarVista CEO Fernando Szew shared, “Jonathan and Stacy have taken a world that has enraptured audiences in all its many forms over the years and given it a contemporary, female-focused spin. It is with great anticipation that we partner with IM Global Television to bring this exciting new vision directly into viewers’ homes.

IM Global Television President Mark Stern also threw in his two cents: “There’s clearly a deep and abiding interest in this timeless story. We love Stacy and Jonathan’s approach to this adaptation and look forward to partnering with Marvista as we bring this gripping tale of survival and adventure to life for a new generation of Kong fans.
