Nicki Minaj Reads Maya Angelou Poem ‘Still I Rise’ | Music News

Nicki Minaj, one of the most unapologetic black women in the public eye, recited a poem by the late Maya Angelou that promotes black female strength in the face of adversity. The poem was read at the A+E event Shining A Light: A Concert for Progress on Race in America, a concert that funds race-related projects in America.

Though the beautiful lines were created by Angelou, most of the poem seemed to reference the “Anaconda” singer herself. “Does my sexiness upset you? / Does it come as a surprise / That I dance like I’ve got diamonds / at the meeting of my thighs?” Minaj recites with a matter-of-fact expression and a smile at the end. For most of the reading, her face is serious which is appropriate for the poem’s topic and serves to enhance the message that Angelou expressed so eloquently.
