Petite Noir

Yesterday (August 25), Petite Noir, a.k.a. Yannick Ilunga, shared a track called “MDR” from his forthcoming album La Vie Est Belle/Life Is Beautiful. The album is due out on September 11 via Double Six / Domino. The singer and producer from Cape Town, South Africa is known for his blending of musical styles and “MDR” is no exception to the rule.

It combines elements of ’80s pop and Afrobeat through Ilunga’s soulful voice and the bouncing, upbeat percussion that harks back to the rhythms of his homeland. There even seems to be a lyrical reference to the film Grease in the chorus. Listen to “MDR” via YouTube below.

I am open to any kind of new, interesting music but I also have a passion for discovering hidden gems in the music of the past. My main areas of interest are electronic music, hip hop, soul, funk and jazz. I also enjoy reading and writing and have been contributing poetry to an online arts and culture magazine which goes by the name of Foci.
