Phife Dawg + J Dilla – Nutshell | Music Video

Hundreds of New Yorkers filled the lawn of St. Alban’s Park, Queensbridge, in celebration of A Tribe Called Quest’s late Phife Dawg. The posthumous “Nutshell”, a J Dilla produced track, would have been part of the new album, Give Thanks, which Phife had been working on, up until dying of diabetes on Tuesday, March 22.

The song has tributes to the late rapper both in the introduction and conclusion of the track, from some famous faces in the genre. His flow mixes expert repetition that sounds anything but repetitious, and very inspired. A fair few tongue twisters, that’s for sure. The conclusion also features, aswell as tributes, a remarkable freestyle from the man, too.

As regarding the visuals, it takes place mostly in an old, dilapidated warehouse as he raps his verses. There are some scenes, if you like, featuring him as he raps his verses superimposed on the few unbroken panes of glass on location. Throughout there are subtle apparel changes, slightly discombobulating and disorientating the viewer, particular the contrasts in colour.
