Ridley Scott To Direct ‘The Cartel’ | Film News

Ridley Scott has been announced as the director of an up and coming film adaptation of Don Winslow’s novel The Cartel. The novel, which holds parallels with the real life story of escapee drug lord El Chapo, chronicles the struggle of conflict between two former friends, whose paths have now diverged as one has joined the Drug Enforcement Agency and the other is part of the drug cartel.

As well as directing, Scott will produce with his Scott Free Films president Michael Schaefer. Screenwriter Shane Salerno, whose works include Armageddon and most recently Oliver Stones’ Savages, is due to write the script.  Although the film is in early stages of development, rumours suggest Leonardo DiCaprio will be cast in one of the leading roles. Scott is currently in post-production for the upcoming sci-fi film The Martian, the movie which stars Matt Damon is due to open on October 2.
