Rupert Wyatt Confirmed To Direct X-Men Spinoff ‘Gambit’ | Film News

Marvel Comics -Gambit

Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) has been announced as the new director of the latest addition to the X-Men Franchise. Gambit is one of the X Men’s most popular mutants and his solo movie is set to be released by 20th Century Fox next year.

Channing Tatum is playing the card throwing Remy LeBeau and producing the film alongside his Free Association partners Reid Carolin, Lauren Shuler Donner and Simon Kinberg. Josh Zetumer (Robocop) will write the script. Until today, no director has been attached to the project, Bennett Miller and Darren Aronofsky both having turned down the opportunity.

Gambit has been a popular and significant character since 1990. The Cajun master thief from New Orleans uses kinetic energy to charge objects that then explode, playing cards that he throws being his objects of choice. He can use this power to enhance his physical abilities too. The first time we saw Gambit within an X-Men movie was X-Men Origins: Wolverine, where he was played by Taylor Kitsch.

Despite that movie’s poor reception, Tatum was keen to bring Gambit to his own solo feature. Having grown up by the Mississippi River, Tatum should have far better success with the Cajun accent that Kitsch did. Gambit will be the third X-Men movie released next year, with Deadpool coming to theaters in February and X Men: Apocalypse in May.
