Stormzy, the Wicked Skengman, is apparently a romantic at heart, too. With the coming of his girlfriend Maya Jama’s birthday, he dedicated a new track, “Birthday Girl”, to her. Rare, indeed, is it that the Big Smoke’s most imposing emcees get lovey dovey and sentimental, but “Birthday Girl” is definitely another side to a quite an intimidating man.
The track has a certain melancholy and sadness to it, like a bluesman trying to convey his joy but worrying all well in his world is merely a dream they will wake up from any second. Stormzy’s lyrics are not necessarily mushy, the only time any abandon occurs is the earnest singing of the song’s hook.
