Sylvester Stallone To Direct ‘Creed 2’ | Film News

While we were all disappointed to hear the news that Ryan Coogler will not be returning to direct the sequel to Creed, but we may have the next best thing. Rocky himself, Sylvester Stallone, has signed on to direct Creed 2.

Stallone has already directed two films in the franchise: Rocky III and Rocky Balboa, and has also directed the bonkers Rambo and also The Expendables. This however, might be his toughest task: directing the sequel to a critically acclaimed film that Coogler was able to balance perfectly. Stallone has a tough act to follow.

The sequel has been moving steadily along in pre-production for a while, with the plot set to revolve around Adonis Creed (Michael B. Jordan) and the man who killed his father, Ivan Drago. That’s all we know right now, as details are very vague.

The Rocky franchise has a very, err, rocky history with sequels. Rocky V is infamous for being awful, and even the most ardent fans of the franchise will tell you that Stallone kept bringing back the character way after his expiration date had arrived.

That being said, a Creed sequel was always on the cards thanks to its success, let’s hope that Stallone can help continue the story that Coogler helped tell so well in the first film.

Creed 2 currently does not have a release date, though a 2019 release is likely because of Jordan’s busy schedule, with early 2018 likely being put aside for him to promote Coogler’s Black Panther.
