Yesterday on Beats 1, Tegan and Sara‘s new song, “Boyfriend”, received its first play-through.
The song is about a love triangle Sara Quin experienced with a woman and that woman’s boyfriend. As Quin explained on-air (via Billboard), “we’ve all been in that situation where we really like someone and we want to make it official and they’re not ready, that’s what the song is about”.
The chorus switches between the two acting like lovers and best friends, a back-and-forth conflict that ends with the line “I don’t wanna be your secret anymore”.
The song has an upbeat electro-pop feel which can be heard in full below:
