The Sherlock 90-minutes Christmas special Sherlock: The Abominable Bride had the biggest overnight ratings of any U.K. show during the holiday season, with an average of 8.4 million viewers watching the BBC show on January 1. The episode, which was set in the original era of Sherlock Holmes, the Victorian 19th century, was the day’s most-watched show in the U.K, and it was the first episode to be premiered in UK and US (Masterpiece Mystery! on PBS) on the same day.

The long-awaited fourth season should begin in April, according to writer and producer Steven Moffat. Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman reprise their roles as Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson in both the special and the upcoming series.
