80-Year Old Author Joan Didion Is The New Face Of Céline | Fashion News

Céline have revealed 80-year-old literary icon Joan Didion as the new face of their Spring 2015 campaign. Didion, who is the author of classics such as Play It as It Lays and Slouching Towards Bethlehem, is shown sporting oversized sunglasses, a large gold pendant necklace and a black turtleneck in the first photo from the campaign, which was shot by Juergen Teller. Phoebe Philo, creative director of Céline, chose Didion to represent the brand’s minimal, pseudo-intellectual vibe.

Didion has often been admired for her effortless style as well as her literary works, having been seen as a fashion icon since the 70s, when she was pictured posing from the seat of her Corvette Stingra. She has been described by Vogue as perhaps “the ultimate Céline woman”. Céline is not the first fashion brand to feature mature women in their ads, as Lanvin cast 82-year-old Jacqueline Murdock in its Spring/Summer 2012 campaign, whilst Dolce and Gabbana featured elderly Italian women in its Spring 2015 campaign.
