Vince Staples has teamed up with local officials in Long Beach, California, to back a YMCA program called the Youth Institute. The program will help twenty kids learn filmmaking, graphic design, music production, 3D printing, and product design, so say reports.
He contributed an undisclosed amount to the program. It will be held at a local middle school and will serve eighth and ninth grade students. Alongside Councilman Rex Richardson and other city staffers, Staples helped announced the program’s launch at Ramona Park.
The rapper has frequently mentioned the park in his music, most recently on his debut album, Summertime ’06.
“I want to be able to be one of the people that reinforces the fact that we matter just as much as the next person. That’s actually the biggest thing I can do for this community”.
He spoke of his involvement on Twitter, adding, “Work hard to do something for kids so they have something other to do other kill each other this summer and y’all got Spike Lee jokes.. Lol”.
