It seems odd to recall now, but 2000’s X-Men was very much the film that started this superhero boom that doesn’t seem on the verge of ending. Yes, there was a time when studios didn’t think superhero films could make any money. Seems absurd now. Bryan Singer helmed that original X-Men film, changing blockbuster filmmaking forever, and is now set to try his luck on the smaller screen.
20th Century Fox and Marvel have hired Singer to produce and direct an X-Men related series about “two ordinary parents who discover that their children possess mutant powers. Forced to go on the run from a hostile government, the family joins up with an underground network of mutants and must fight to survive”.
The show is created by Matt Nix (Burn Notice), and while Singer is already the executive producer of the show Legion, this will be his first foray into directing TV since helming the pilot episode of House.
There’s an abundance of superhero TV shows now, so it’s hardly a surprise that Singer would lend his talents to a burgeoning world looking to get a stranglehold on their own medium. Can he help 2017 be the year the superhero TV show starts making huge waves? Combine this with the release Netflix’s The Defenders, and it’s very possible.
