You may remember the debut of the first Sonic The Hedgehog trailer. It was a day when the internet was collectively aghast at the design of their favourite speedy blue friend, who was now in live-action form with smaller eyes, human teeth, and a general odd looking texture.
The backlash was instantaneous. The effects artists on the film quickly released statements acknowledging the issues with the character, promised that it was not the finished model, and vowed to significantly alter it. Paramount even pushed the film’s release date back in order to account for the changes.
Months after that debacle, here we are with the second trailer for the film, complete with a new looking Sonic. Fans will be pleased, as the titular hedgehog no longer looks like an uncanny valley nightmare, and is instead back to his old self, looking much more like the lovable protagonist video game fans fell in love with in the 90s.
The trailer above also smartly no longer uses Coolio‘s ‘Gangsta’s Paradise’, which was included in the first trailer, also questioned, and made little sense. Thus, finally removed from the controversy regarding how Sonic looks, this film looks merely ok.
It’s still strange that they decided to transport Sonic to the real, human world, but the film mostly looks like average family fun. Considering how much of a trainwreck this could have been, Paramount will likely be very happy with that.
Sonic is voiced by Ben Schwartz, and the film also stars James Marsden and Jim Carrey. It hits cinemas February 14, 2020.
