Universal have dropped the first trailer for upcoming espionage thriller The 355. The film stars Jessica Chastain as wild-card CIA agent forced to recruit an off-the-books team after a top secret weapon falls into the hands of mercenaries.
She brings aboard a MI6 ally and cutting-edge computer specialist (Lupita Nyong’o), a rival German agent (Diane Kruger), and a Colombian psychologist (Penelope Cruz), while a mysterious woman (Fan Bingbing) tracks their every move. The film is written by Theresa Rebeck and directed by Simon Kinberg.

The trailer contains a lot of familiar spy imagery and may not have the most unique plot, but that’s a killer cast at the core of it. The globe-trotting antics definitely have a Mission: Impossible vibe, and that and the diverse cast should give the film a chance to be a international hit.
The film is currently scheduled for a January 15, 2021 release, which is a slight worry because that’s traditionally when studios dump projects they’ve essentially given up on. Hopefully that’s not a sign that The 355 is a terrible mess – and who knows, it might be delayed anyway – but Kinberg’s last film, X-Men: Dark Phoenix, wasn’t well liked at all, so we’ll see.
Chastain will next be seen in drama The Eyes Of Tammy Faye, while Nyong’o has signed on to star in the HBO Max series adaptation of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie‘s acclaimed novel Americanah.
Cruz is currently filming a Spanish comedy titled Official Competition, Kruger will star in the new TV version of Swimming With Sharks, and Bingbing has a role in upcoming adventure fantasy The King’s Daughter.
