Magnet Releasing, a genre specific branch of Magnolia Pictures, has announced that they have acquired worldwide distribution rights to upcoming horror anthology XX, set to star female leads, and be created by female filmmakers. Although plot information is not available at this point, the compilation will be directed by Karyn Kusama, Mary Harron, Jennifer Lynch and Jovana Vuckovic. Each filmmaker has been given complete artistic freedom as long as they stay within budget and their pieces are horror related. Also joining the team, stop-motion animator Sofia Carrillo will conjoin the features and create a title sequence for the anthology.
For those of you unfamiliar with these directors, I can imagine that together, their body of work will formulate a diverse and interesting collection of horror features. Harron is perhaps the best known filmmaker as she adapted Bret Easton Ellis’ novel American Psycho into a critically successful film starring Christian Bale and Willem Dafoe, the film also garnered a cult following. Lynch, a rather unknown director, is the daughter of surrealist filmmaker David Lynch known for his 2001 film Mulholland Drive. Being a Lynch fan myself, I only hope that some of her father’s quirky style will be carried over to this feature.
Karyn Kusama is the director of my personal guilty pleasure Jennifer’s Body starring Megan Fox and Amanda Seyfried. Although the film was received negatively by critics, the film does well for representing female empowerment. Finally Jovana Vuckovic, previously a visual affects artist, is now an award winning short filmmaker, most notable for The Captured Bird, a dark fable produced by Guillermo del Toro.
Make sure you check out each of their filmographies for a better idea of their cinematic style and also their accolades. Each sharing ties to the horror genre, I have no doubt that they will create something really interesting. I am intrigued to hear more about the project, and will be sure to bring you updates as they are released. Until then, hold tight as production for the anthology will be completed in 2015.
