‘Ace Ventura 3’ In The Works At Amazon | Film News

Until the belated Dumb & Dumber follow-up in 2014, the only sequel to his own movies Jim Carrey had ever made was Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls at the start of his career. In this age of rampant nostalgia and sequels/reboots/remakes, it’s little surprise that he’s going back to the character that launched his career.

On the heels of Coming 2 America, Amazon has greenlit a third Ace Ventura film. Morgan Creek, the company behind the first two movies, are working on the film for the streamer. Sonic The Hedgehog writers Pat Casey and Josh Miller will pen the film. Carrey was the villain in that film, so he’s got familiarity with them.

However, Carrey has not actually been officially confirmed for the movie, but it seems all but a given considering he literally is Ace Ventura. While there could be an avenue Morgan Creek and Amazon could go if he decided against coming back, his involvement would really be the only reason to make this movie, otherwise you’re looking at some sort of disastrous Son Of The Mask scenario.

The Morgan Creek team told Park Circus about fans’ appetite for a new Ventura installment: “During COVID, audiences have been in love and are thrilled to have beloved characters brought back with new stories. Ace Ventura will see a new day at Amazon as a major motion picture/theatrical with the Sonic the Hedgehog writers”.

In most cases, these comedy “nostalgia sequels” don’t turn out too well. Coming 2 America hasn’t been well received, and previous attempts such as Zoolander 2 and the aforementioned Dumb & Dumber To fell flat. The rare ones that work, like the Borat sequel, usually contain a character that actually fits the modern world better than they did in their previous incarnation.

Ace Ventura…doesn’t. And the films themselves feel very of their time. Just go back to the first movie and see the reaction to the discovery that a character is Trans for proof that this series maybe deserves to stay in the 90s.

Without Carrey yet officially signed on, it’s clear that this sequel is in the early days of development. We’ll wait and see if he does indeed return, and then what Ace Ventura 3 will even be about. Expect a Tiger King reference at some point.
