Adam Driver In Talks To Join Matt Damon & Ben Affleck In Ridley Scott’s ‘The Last Duel’ | Film News

Adam Driver‘s busy slate just got busier. The actor already has Marriage Story, The Report and Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker lined up for the winter. Now he’s in talks to join Ben Affleck, Matt Damon and Jodie Comer in Ridley Scott‘s The Last Duel.

The film was initially described as revolving around a man who goes to war and returns to discover a friend has raped his wife in 14th century France. No one will believe the woman, so the soldier appeals to the king and says he wants to fight a duel to the death to decide the man’s fate. It becomes the last legally sanctioned duel in France.

However, that logline has since been softened. Variety now states that the film “is an epic tale of betrayal and justice, told from three distinct points of view: two knights (Damon and Driver) whose bond is tested by treachery and a young woman (Comer) forced to navigate the brutal and oppressive culture of the era in order to survive”.

Affleck was initially on board to play the rapist, but it seems as if Driver has quietly taken over that role. Variety mentions that Affleck’s commitment to Adrian Lyne‘s Deep Water meant that he could only have a supporting role, although that film begins production in November while The Last Duel doesn’t start shooting until early 2020.

Driver is a great actor and has developed into a bit of a star. Quite a surprise for those that were used to seeing him in supporting roles in shows like Girls and indies such as Frances Ha. That was before his role as Kylo Ren made him pretty much a household name.

Affleck and Damon co-wrote the Last Duel script with Nicole Holofcener. Their production company Pearl Street Films will oversee the project.
