Adam Driver Led Romantic Musical ‘Annette’ Back On With Leos Carax Directing | Film News

Leos Carax‘s long-gestating English-language romantic musical Annette is reportedly being revived. Charles Gillibert‘s CG Cinema, whose credits include Personal Shopper, has hopped on board to revive the project. Adam Driver is on board to star, and Amazon will release the film in the U.S.

Annette will trace the rise and fall of two star-crossed Hollywood lovers and the exceptional destiny of their daughter. It will bring together the rock band Sparks to compose original songs, and celebrated music producer Marius de Vries, known for La La Land and Moulin Rouge.

Carax, an enigmatic figure, has garnered a reputation for ambiguous, artistic films. His credits include Holy Motors, Boy Meets Girl, and Mauvais Sang. Annette has long been his passion project, and looked like it would finally get made in 2016 before financing fell through.

Although Driver is now best known as Kylo Ren in the new Star Wars films, outside of that he’s always been interested in smaller, stranger films. With lead roles in films like Jim Jarmusch‘s Paterson, Frances Ha and Silence, Annette seems right up his alley. It’s likely that his newfound starpower helped get financing, and also helped secure Amazon’s distribution.

The idea of Carax helming a unique romantic musical is tantalising. Fortunately it is now no longer just a pipe dream. Annette begins shooting in mid-august.
