Adam Sandler has another movie in the works at Netflix, and this time he’s bringing the whole family. The streamer is adapting Fiona Rosenbloom‘s coming-of-age novel You Are So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah into a film, and Sandler will star alongside his teenage daughters Sunny and Sadie and wife Jackie.
Sandler also has some other old friends along for the ride too, including Idina Menzel, who collaborated with him on Uncut Gems, and veteran actor Luis Guzmán, who previously worked with Sandler on Punch-Drunk Love. Saturday Night Live newcomer Sarah Sherman also has a key role in the film.
The film will be set in the present day, but the novel takes place in the early-2000s and follows Stacey Friedman, who is preparing for one of the most important events in her young life; her bat mitzvah. But in the lead up to the big day, she’s thrown for a loop after catching her BFF Lydia Katz kissing her crush Andy Goldfarb.
The betrayal causes Stacey to yell the titular line and is the first in the series of comedic events that threaten to ruin one of the most important events of her young life.
Sammi Cohen (Crush) is directing the film from a script written by Alison Peck (Work It). Naturally, Sandler is also producing the film via his Happy Madison banner.
Sandler is one of Hollywood’s most lovable stars, and audiences are already more than happy to spend a couple of hours with him. Throw in his own family as co-stars, and this should be a very wholesome and pleasant experience. And as a bonus for Netflix, Rosenbloom has a follow-up novel titled We Are So Crashing Your Bar Mitzvah, so there’s sequel potential here, too.
Sandler recently starred in basketball drama Hustle and has sci-fi drama Spaceman and comedy sequel Murder Mystery 2 in post-production. All of those projects are for Netflix, of course.
