Alexander Wang’s Spring 2019 Collection Celebrates His Immigrant Roots | Fashion News

Set in a huge square space on a Manhattan rooftop, Alexander Wang‘s patriotic runway show, titled “Collection 1“, was reflecting his Taiwanese-American heritage.

It was the first time Alexander Wang’s father had ever seen one of his shows in person, and it was the “perfect one for him to attend”, the designer told Vogue. Indeed, Wang recently reunited his long-separated parents on a road trip in Santa Barbara, and was deeply moved to hear their story about immigrating to America, so much so that it inspired the starting point for his Spring 2019 Collection.

Throughout the show, guests were given an indication of the collection’s message, from note cards on every seat that read “Today marks a new beginning, a new identity, and a new day for my brand” or “Pride in being an American with immigrant roots”, to Childish Gambino‘s tune “This is America” that echoed from the speakers.

Starring Wang’s forever-favorites Bella Hadid and Kaia Gerber, the collection itself was as Wang himself put it, “rock ‘n’ roll the Wang way“, with trashy-chic cropped tops, bandanas, low-rider jeans, ripped denim and leather jackets.
