With Black Mirror’s Bandersnatch and Bear Grylls’ You vs. Wild, choose-your-adventure-style films are becoming increasingly popular. Now Alexandre Aja, the director of this year’s Crawl, is giving it a go.

The team behind the new interactive production looks promising. The idea came from Haunting On The Hill House’s Mike Flanagan, and the screenplay will be penned by two other important figures in the world of horror movies – Jeff Howard (Oculus) and Nick Simon (The Girl in the Photographs).

Genre master Aja will direct the as yet untitled movie for Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Partners. The company is known for family-friendly productions, such as The House with a Clock in Its Walls and The BFG, but it was also involved in the creation of Netflix’s Haunting On The Hill House.

In their newest project, Amblin will collaborate with Kino Industries’ CtrlMovie technology to create an interactive narrative, allowing viewers to manipulate the storyline. Using a special app on their mobile phones, members of the audience will be able to vote in the cinema and influence the characters’ decisions at crucial points in the story.

This means that the film will have a different plot, running time and ending, depending on the options selected by the viewers.
