Alfred Molina To Reprise Doctor Octopus Role In Next Tom Holland ‘Spider-Man’ Project | Film News

Alfred Molina is returning to the Spider-Man universe. Despite appearing as Doctor Octopus two Spider-Man’s ago – back when Tobey Maguire was playing the role before Tom Holland and Andrew Garfield – back in 2004’s Spider-Man 2, Molina will reportedly reprise his role for the upcoming Sony/Marvel instalment.

This follows the news from a few months ago that Jamie Foxx will reprise his role as Electro in the film. Foxx played the role in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 when Garfield still played the title role.

Throw this all together with J.K. Simmons returning to his J. Jonah Jameson role from the Maguire era in Spider-Man: Far From Home, and you’ve got a curious set of circumstances.

Usually these movies will do anything they can to distance themselves from previous incarnations. After all, these characters battled a totally different Spider-Man than the one in in the current films. But perhaps Sony/Marvel are aiming for some sort of multiverse angle, á la Into The Spider-Verse and something that was somewhat teased in Avengers: Endgame.

We do know that Doctor Strange will be appearing in the film too, so this theory is looking pretty strong, as he is the character that could foresee the millions of potential outcomes to the final Endgame battle.

There are already people clamouring for a live-action Spider-Verse version, where Maguire and Garfield could return as Spider-Man from different universes.

But who knows, maybe this is exactly what Sony/Marvel are doing here, except not as a Spider-Verse remake but it’s own thing. They would probably try to keep Maguire and Garfield’s appearances a secret if that was the case, so this is all possible.

We’ll have to wait and see what happens, but the pieces are falling into place and the third MCU Spider-Man instalment is shaping up to be pretty intriguing.

Jon Watts is returning to direct once again, and Zendaya, Marisa Tomei and Jacob Batalon are all reprising their roles from the previous films. The movie is currently set for a December 17, 2021 release.
