‘Avengers: Endgame’ Overtakes ‘Avatar’ As Biggest Movie In History | Film News

After 10 undefeated years as the world’s highest-grossing film of all times, Avatar has lost its crown to Marvel’s last Avengers adventure.

This past weekend, Avengers: Endgame officially overtook James Cameron’s iconic Avatar as the top box office film in history. On Saturday, in its 13th weekend of release, the Disney and Marvel blockbuster crossed $2.7902 billion at the global box office, surpassing $2.7897 billion that the James Cameron’s sci-fi film earned.

Even though Avatar is now owned by Disney, as the company acquired Fox a few months ago, the American animation industry leader decided to re-release the Avengers last film, in order to beat Avatar’s record.

Avengers: Endgame now holds the title of second-highest grossing movie in the US, right behind another Disney tentpole, Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The film has collected $1.9 billion all around the world, especially in The United Kingdom, China, Brazil, South Korea and Mexico, becoming an international huge success.

The good news was announced by Marvel’s president Kevin Feige on Saturday during a presentation at the San Diego Comic-Con.

Disney’s co-chairman and chief creative officer Alan Horn said “A huge congratulations to the Marvel Studios and Walt Disney Studios teams, and thank you to the fans around the world who lifted ‘Avengers: Endgame’ to these historic heights”, in a statement.

Avengers: Endgame was already crowned as the film with the biggest global opening weekend with $1.2 billion, the strongest international bow with $866 million and the best domestic launch with $357 million. It looks like the Marvel crew has killed it in their last ‘saving the world’ mission!
