‘Cloverfield 4’ Already Completed And Getting 2018 Release? | Film News

The strangeness – and secrecy – of the Cloververse continues. After 10 Cloverfield Lane was sprung on us two years ago just months after it was revealed to even exist, last month we got word that the supposed third movie in the interconnected universe, God Particle, was potentially being sold to Netflix.

That film is supposed to arrive as early as April, but there’s now word that a fourth Cloverfield movie is completed, and could follow as soon as a few months later. How has this been kept under wraps? Well:

Last year it was announced that Paramount and J.J. Abrams‘ production company Bad Robot were making a sci-fi film called Overlord. The film would focus on a band of soldiers dropped behind enemy lines right before D-Day. Their goal was to find out what the Nazis were up to, which turns out to be some strange sci-fi shenanigans.

That’s an intriguing premise in and of itself, but it’s now been confirmed that Overlord is indeed the fourth Cloverfield movie. Filming began last May, and word is that it could be looking at an October release date. While it might seem strange to release two Cloverfield movies in one year, it’s worth noting that God Particle was originally intended to be released in 2017.

Several shifts in release date pushed that film back to its current date of Friday, April 20. Though that date itself could still change if the rumoured deal between Paramount and Netflix goes through, and perhaps the streaming giant will find a preferred spot somewhere else on the calendar for God Particle, which might also end up being titled Cloverfield Station.

Phew. So, with all these movies acting as spiritual sequels to the original Cloverfield, it’s fair to wonder where this is all going, or whether it’s intended to go anywhere. It’s possible that Abrams and co. are simply cashing in on Cloverfield‘s name brand and making these standalone sci-fi films half-connected to the 2008 film in order to reel in more box office profits.

Hopefully not. Hopefully it’s going somewhere, but we’ll have to wait and see. How long we’ll have to wait is up in the air, but God Particle is currently scheduled to arrive in April, for now. The lesson in all of this? Assume every film J.J. Abrams is involved in is a Cloverfield film.
