Disney has released their first trailer for its live action movie entitled Cruella, which will serve as a prequel to the classic 101 Dalmatians .
Cruella is set in mid-1970’s London, with Emma Stone playing the lead role of the soon-to-be-villain Cruella de Vil. She is an aspiring punk designer, who is trying to get society’s wealthiest people to notice her and her sophisticated designs.
During this process, she becomes the infamous Cruella de Vil by stealing puppies to make coats. With her shocking black and white hair and punk rock aesthetic, Emma Stone perfectly transforms into a classic villain who is looking for a place in this world.
The brand-new film also stars Emma Thompson, Joel Fry, Paul Walter Hauser, Emily Beecham and Mark Strong. The prequel, directed by Craig Gillespie (I, Tonya) is full of dazzling fashion, great costumes, breathtaking visual effects, as well as cute dalmatians.
Unlike the previous Disney live action movies like Aladdin, The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, Cruella is just inspired by 101 Dalmatians, rather than being a direct adaptation of the story.
Disney tried the similar formula with Maleficent. However, the first film performed well but the following sequel Maleficent: Mistress of Evil turned out to underperform.
Cruella is set to be released on May 28. At this moment in time, it’s due to be out in theaters, but according to Disney CEO Bob Chapek: “things could change with its theatrical state depending on where the world is at with the current pandemic“.
In other words, there is still a chance that Cruella would end up being a Disney+ premiere either instead of in theaters or alongside a theatrical release in some countries with eased COVID-19 restrictions.
We will probably hear more from Disney in the upcoming weeks, but for now let’s watch the trailer and wait for May 28 to dive into a villain journey!
