Neo-Soul artist Joy Nesbitt has released her new single titled “Black”, featuring rapper Bizzy Savant, a fitting song with the start of this Black History Month!
“I am black. I am Beautiful. I am strong” are the empowering affirmations that Joy sings fiercely in this acoustic soul track as a reply to what is happening in this troublesome time for Black Americans. With these lyrics, she pays homage to the memory of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd, who were horribly murdered, as she aims to give herself this daily reminder of her worth.
Her single conveys this simple but powerful message, that Black is beautiful, worthy, strong and “should live and live long”, and her message resonates like an anthem. Rhythmic elements, energetic rap verse contrasting the rest of the track and vocal harmonies make “Black” a vibrant track, a must have in your playlist.
“Black” is part of the 13 tracks on Joy’s upcoming album, Atlas Rising, a neo-soul album that shares gripping, authentic stories of Black femininity based on her learnings as a Social Anthropology and Music major. She wrote that album during summer 2020 while her virtual mentorship program at She Is The Music, a non-profit organization founded by Alicia Keys in order to support women in the music industry.
Some of her main artistic influences include Stevie Wonder, Moses Sumney, Lauryn Hill, and Alicia Keys. Joy plays several instruments, including piano, violin, cello, guitar, ukulele and for 8 years studied classical and jazz vocals.
So far, the Harvard student originally from Dallas has dropped four singles off her upcoming album, including this call for change “Black” that is now available on all major platforms and will be assigned a video clip soon! Atlas Rising is slated for release on February 19.
