First Trailer For Disney’s Live-Action ‘Mulan’ Arrives | Film Trailer

It seems like every week there’s a new trailer for another live-action adaptation of a Disney classic. This week, it’s Mulan. A remake of the beloved 1998 film, the story tells the epic adventure of a fearless young woman forced to masquerade as a man in order to fight off northern invaders attacking China.

While the film is based on the Disney movie, the foundation of the story comes from the narrative poem, The Ballad Of Mulan. Niki Caro (Whale Rider) directs, with Liu Yifei playing the titular role. The cast is rounded off by big names such as Gong Li and Jet Li.

Disney’s live-action trailers have gotten some flack recently. The Lion King looked shot-for-shot the same compared to the original film, and it sometimes often seems as if Disney is going for the safest possible option, with Aladdin as a recent example.

With Mulan though, the trailer is very good. It has the sort of epic feel to it the other Disney adaptations didn’t, and it looks as if more thought has gone into this remake than just profits. The massive crowd shots look mightily impressive, looking similar to Michael Mann‘s own period epic, The Last Of The Mohicans.

There’s promise here. We’ll wait and see whether Mulan can be the Disney remake to break free from the shackles of its original. Written by Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver, and Elizabeth Martin & Lauren Hynek, the film arrives March 27, 2020.
