First Trailer For Romcom ‘We Broke Up’ Arrives | Film Trailer

The first trailer has dropped for Vertical Entertainment’s new romantic comedy, We Broke Up. Led by up-and-coming stars William Jackson Harper (The Good Place) and Aya Cash (The Boys, You’re The Worst), the film revolves around a recently separated couple still pretending to be together during a friend’s wedding.

This is actually a Good Place reunion of sorts, as Harper is joined by Jeff Rosenberg, who directed many episodes of the show. He’s directing here, and has also co-written the script. The trailer above gives off typical romcom vibes, which should be good comfort food in these times. It will also be great to see Harper and Cash lead a film, something they have rarely done thus far in their careers.

It will also be interesting to see if We Broke Up follows the typical romcom beats, or whether it’s actually one of those revisionist ones – think (500) Days Of Summer or the recent Palm Springs – where the tropes of the genre are subverted because they’re now so familiar to audiences. Making a film about a couple that’s already broken up suggests that might be the case.

Harper and Cash have recently concluded their respective TV shows. Harper will next be seen in Barry Jenkins‘ highly-anticipated Amazon series The Underground Railroad and as the lead in season two of HBO Max’s Love Life. Cash just signed on to play Esther Liebowitz in new Showtime series, The First Lady.

We Broke Up arrives in cinemas and on demand on Friday, April 23.
